Good Turn for America - Tell Us About Your Community Service!

Every Boy Scout knows that service to others is a vital means of demonstrating Scout Spirit.  You learned this as a young Cub Scout when you were taught to "do a good turn daily."  Of course, the purpose of community service is not merely to meet a requirement for rank advancement, but to aspire to live by the words of Lord Baden Powell "to try to leave this world a little better than you found it," and "the most worthwhile thing is to try to put happiness into the lives of others."

We know that the scouts and adult leaders of Troop 99 are involved in many volunteer experiences both through the troop and the community.  Many of you volunteer your time, talent, and treasure through your faith community, school, neighborhood, and organizations.  You may work on your own or with your family, friends, and neighbors.  Scouts really make a difference in the world!

Whatever you are doing, we want to know about it. The Troop 99 Committee wants to track your efforts and hard work.  We have developed a form to help you report your volunteer efforts to the troop.  The GOOD TURN FOR AMERICA form is available at each troop meeting from Cindy Tucker or a stack on the piano.  (Soon, you will be able to download the forms from the Troop 99 website.)  Take one for each activity you are involved in that is NOT sponsored by Troop 99.  A separate form is required for each activity (this is a requirement from the national program). Forms should be completed and returned to Cindy Tucker, Ed Graesser, or Julia Diebold.  Troop 99-sponsored volunteer activities will be recorded by the Adult Leader in charge of the activity (for example, lawn mowing and leaf raking at PCOC, Coastal Clean-Up, etc.), so you need only complete forms for those activities you perform that are not troop-sponsored.  We need a completed form for Second Class and Star volunteer hours and for Life Projects.  A separate form is required for Eagle Projects (see your Eagle Packet).   If you need help completing the form, contact Cindy Tucker at bubbaatrout@verizon.net  or 856-863-5977, or ask her to help you at a meeting.

In 2010, we will be tracking volunteer activities by patrol and the patrol with the highest number of reported volunteer activities will have boasting rights as the MOST HELPFUL PARTOL for the coming year!  Scouts who complete at least 20 hours in a year will earn the GOOD TURN FOR AMERICA patch (or a rocker in subsequent years).  Remember, you need to report at least 20 hours each year to earn the rocker.  New scouts will need only 10 hours to earn the patch their first year.  If the troop (both scouts and registered adult leaders) can record at least 1000 hours from January 1, 2010 to December 1, 2010, the Troop will provide pizza at the annual Holiday Party in December 2010.

So, share your good works with us so we can recognize and celebrate you and your patrol.
